After an incredible turnout in 2012, the 2nd annual Cardiff Kook Run 10K & 5K is back! The Cardiff Kook Run is a celebration of one of the greatest towns on the map. On one of the greatest days of the year, Super Bowl Sunday, February 3, 2013.
The scenic 10k loop will begin at Moonlight Beach, pass under the famous Cardiff Kook along the 101, rise above some of the most popular surf breaks in San Diego and then make its way down to Cardiff State Beach. Then you get to experience it all again on your way back. For public safety, the 5K turnaround is north of the “Cardiff Kook” and will not run past the “Cardiff Kook” due to train & traffic crossing at Chesterfield Drive and Coast Highway 101.
The Cardiff Kook Run is the idea of Steve Lebherz and Seth Brewer, two locals who have been running this particular route for 15 years. They always said, “Everybody should see this!” Now everybody can. Locals, kids, adults, serious runners and kooks alike are invited to run– for life, for community, for a really fun time. The 2013 Cardiff Kook Run Award is now on display at the Cardiff Library!
They also have specific community goals for the run:
- Establish a foundation for the Safety and Preservation of the “Magic Carpet Ride” and surrounds.
- Fund additional P.E. programs at Cardiff Elementary.
- Assist the community of Cardiff with park related funding. All proceeds go right back into improving Cardiff-by-the-Sea.
Parking is available at Moonlight Beach, Encinitas Coaster Station, City Hall and Cottonwood Creek Park.
