Community leaders, surfers, artists, eco-friendly businesses, and musicians will gather at the 2012 Cardiff Surf Classic and Green Beach Fair on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate sustainability. The one-day event, held at Seaside Reef in Cardiff and hosted by the Cardiff 101 Main Street organization, will include surf contests, musical entertainment, tarp surfing by Korduroy.TV and Bamboo SK8, a board swap, live art, a paipo/handplane demo, and more.
Local San Diego professionals, government agencies, and non-profit organizations and companies in all fields – including architecture, building materials, energy and conservation, food and agriculture, reuse and recycling, transportation, eco-friendly products and environmental education – will have booths exhibiting their services and products to encourage a more sustainable lifestyle.
“Our number one goal of the event is for everyone to have a wonderful experience and to learn more about protecting the environment and improving the health of your daily life, whether it’s about solar, agriculture, gardening, composting, recycling, transportation, energy efficiency, green home design, water issues, or better products in the surf industry,” said Brenda Dizon, co-creator of the event.
The Cardiff Surf Classic and Green Beach Fair is also a platform for local eco-friendly businesses.
“The best part of a grassroots event like this one is that local businesses gain important exposure,” said event co-creator Betty Steele, a long-time environmental activist who helped launch the San Diego Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.
“It also gives us the opportunity to fuel eco-friendly education in the community. This empowers people to not only be more eco-conscious consumers, but it also encourages them to buy local products, therefore giving their local community and economy a boost.”
The main mission of the event is to bring environmental awareness to our coastal communities. The Cardiff Surf Classic and Green Beach Fair event even inspired the 2011 critically acclaimed documentary about sustainability in the surf industry called “Manufacturing Stoke.”
Activities for the day include two surf contests (12 & under kid’s surf contest and Biz Team Surf Off), Rerip.org and BambooSK8 surfboard and skateboard swap, tarp surfing, Dr. Zoolittle, Avian Eyes Interactive Outreach, eco art kids zone, skateboard obstacle course, cooking lessons, artists’ studio, live music, and more.
